For Filipino international student Rene Antonio “Tony” Arnobit, choosing the University of Newcastle MBA as part of a double double degree in business was more than an academic decision—it was a strategic career move designed to unlock global opportunities.
Currently enrolled in a combined Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of International Business, Tony discovered the University while searching for double degree programs that offered flexibility, reputable rankings, and an inspiring study environment. Newcastle ticked every box.
“I was really drawn to the flexibility of the study options, the location, and the University’s reputation,” Tony said. “It felt like the right place to help me take the next step in my career.”
Tony’s passion for business, especially operations, stems from his time working on the operations team at his previous job in the Philippines. “It taught me to appreciate the rationale behind decisions and the many moving parts that keep a business running smoothly,” he explained.
Tony was inspired by business leaders who had studied locally and then gained international qualifications. Determined to follow a similar path, he decided to enhance his MBA with a second degree in International Business to better position himself for a globally connected career.
At Newcastle, Tony has found more than just academic learning.
“The University has a strong sense of community. People really look out for one another,” he said. This supportive environment has helped him forge meaningful industry connections and gain leadership experience.
He represented international students on the MBA Industry Consultative Committee and participated in the University’s recent EQUIS re-accreditation process—an experience he describes as a significant highlight of his journey so far.
Tony also values the practical learning opportunities, particularly those that enhance communication and presentation skills. “Being able to speak in front of a crowd is exhilarating for me, and the Uni gives me those chances,” he said.
Looking to the future, Tony admits he faces an important decision. While his original plan was to return to the Philippines and pursue a senior role in business, his time in Australia has opened up new possibilities. “I’ve met incredible people here who see potential in me staying and building a career in Australia,” he said. “It will take a lot of planning and soul searching, but I’m open to where the future takes me.”
To other international students, Tony offers sound advice: “Get out of your comfort zone. Embrace the culture, make friends beyond your community, and take every opportunity that comes your way.”
With two world-class degrees in hand, an expanding network, and a global mindset, Tony Arnobit is well on his way to becoming the type of business leader he once admired—and Newcastle has played a key role in that journey.
